What Is Open Flap Debridement?
Open flap debridement is a periodontal procedure used to treat moderate to advanced gum disease when deep infection can’t be fully cleaned with routine deep cleanings alone. During the procedure, the gums are gently lifted away from the teeth so the periodontist can clearly see and remove hardened tartar, bacteria, and infected tissue from deep below the gumline. Once the area is thoroughly cleaned, the gums are carefully repositioned to fit more snugly around the teeth, helping reduce pocket depth and make the area easier to keep clean. This treatment can help stop the progression of gum disease, reduce inflammation and bleeding, protect the bone that supports your teeth, and improve long-term oral health. It may be recommended when gum pockets remain deep, infection persists, or bone loss is beginning to threaten the stability of the teeth.
